Boys Golf tryouts completed last week after four days of play at Sequoyah’s home course at Bradshaw Farm. Seven golfers return from the 2017 State Tournament qualifying Chiefs, and three new golfers will join the 2018 squad. Coach Jon Heath looks to have his best team so far in his 3rd season. The team advanced to postseason play in each of his first two years at Sequoyah.
2018 Roster: At the top 2 positions are Hunter Clay (Sr) and Thomas Brumbeloe (Jr). These two have been named captains for the season, and each finished the tryouts under par. In the next two slots are Ryan Wakefield (Jr) and Joseph Trlica (Soph). Other returning golfers are Patrick Ballance (Sr), Will Brown (Jr), and Brock O’Connor (Soph). Three newcomers were added following the tryouts; they are juniors Collier Pecht and Cole Stewart along with sophomore Geoffrey Moon. For the first time in three years the Chiefs will have more experience from their upperclassmen than from the sophomores and freshmen.
The Chiefs are optimistic about improving on last year’s successful season. They would like to post a better finish in the state tournament this year with both Clay and Brumbeloe definitely able to compete for an individual state championship. In the county tournament the team will tackle a tough task to move up from third last year to take one of the two top spots from Creekview and Etowah. The Chiefs’ top four positions are noticeably better than last year, and added strength should come from the returning crew as well as the newcomers. The Chiefs open the season March 3 in a tournament at Chateau Elan.
