The Sequoyah Golf Team completed the final practice Wednesday on the Bradshaw Farm home course before traveling to Gainesville on Sunday to the Chattahoochee Golf Club for a final practice round for the AAAAAA State Tournament. The State Tournament appearance for the Chiefs is the first in more than 20 years, and while the team is not considered a threat to crack the top ten, two golfers have a good chance to finish among the top scorers individually.
Coach Jon Heath’s team is playing its best golf of the season as displayed by the scores posted in the practice round by all six of the golfers competing in state next week. Brock O’Conner (Fr) playing in the #6 slot, shot 5 strokes better than his season average. Joseph Trlica (Fr) at #5, shot a couple of strokes better than his season average. Also bettering their averages by 5 strokes today were the #3 and #4 men – Ryan Medlin (Sr) and Ryan Wakefield (Soph). The top two golfers, Hunter Clay (Jr) and Thomas Brumbeloe (Soph), have an opportunity to surprise some folks at State. Clay shot another solid par round today, and Brumbeloe carded an under par 35. Comparable scores next week could give Sequoyah a Top 10 finish.
The scores at the State Tournament at Chattahoochee may not come as easily as at the familiar home course at Bradshaw Farm. The added excitement of representing at State may raise the nerves a bit as well, but the team should have no issues playing with the best teams and golfers in the state as the Chiefs have gone up against 5 of the teams earlier this year as well as 7A State Qualifiers Etowah and Woodstock.
The boys will travel to Gainesville for an 18 hole practice round Sunday afternoon, and tee it up Monday morning for Day 1 of the 2 day 36 hole tournament. The team wishes Good Luck to the Sequoyah Girls Golf Team in their appearance at the AAAAAA State Tournament in Gainesville at Chicopee Woods Golf Course on the same dates.
Congratulations to both Sequoyah Golf Teams for advancing to State and Good Luck next week!
